«…we have always had a great deal of respect and admiration for the work they have done in promoting environmental and social justice issues in Ecuador …»

Dear President Correa,

I am writing to express my gravest concerns at hearing the news that the

organisation Accion Ecologica is threatened with closure following the

repeal of its legal status.

We have worked on many occasions with the staff of Accion Ecologica and

have always had a great deal of respect and admiration for the work they

have done in promoting environmental and social justice issues in Ecuador.

Internationally, their work has been seen as a credit to Ecuadorean civil

society and entirely congruent with the new Ecuadorian Constitution.

This action to stop the work of Accion Ecologica is especially puzzling in

light of the way your government has promoted its environmental

credentials – such a move to effectively censor one of Ecuador’s leading

environmental organisations would do a great deal to undermine your

country’s newfound green credibility on the international stage.

I can only presume that some sort of mistake has been made within your

administration, and I therefore hope that some sort of action can be taken

to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Kevin Smith
